The world is your playground
A lot of people consider a job simply as a means to get from month to month, but many people don’t realise that sometimes a job is more than that. It’s not just a pay cheque, it’s a way of life, and it becomes who you are. Candice Chetty is one of those people. She started off studying accounting, because that is what seemed logical at the time.
“I knew I wanted to go into commerce, so when I finished school, I picked accounting. But when I arrived at the University of Kwa Zulu-Natal, things changed for me. I started off with a degree in Accounting, but soon I realised that my heart was just not in it. I switched to marketing and suddenly everything made sense to me.”
Once this industry gets into your blood, you cannot see yourself doing anything else
When she finished studying, she returned home to decide where she would go from there. “When my journey with Blackrock started, I just knew that I’d found my passion in life.” She was introduced to a whole new world, a world that you simply cannot understand if you don’t live in it. “I feel fortunate to be part of the Tsogo Sun team.
And once this industry gets into your blood, you cannot see yourself doing anything else.” She spent the better part of 2015 working as a Promotions Co-ordinator in Nelspruit.
“It was fantastic! Nelspruit was just what I needed to broaden my horizons it made me realise even more how much this industry has to offer.
But in Nelspruit, my tasks became very focused due to the bigger team. I eventually decided that for me to learn and grow, I needed to head back to Newcastle and work on a broader skill set.”
Once she learnt what she needed to as a Promotions Co-ordinator, another opportunity presented itself as a Marketing Manager. “The most fantastic thing about this industry is; as you grow and evolve, you allow others to grow with you. When you move from one position to another, you allow someone else to move up as well.”
I think it’s important for people to always be themselves, and that’s what I aspire to do.
When she is not running around and working hard, you will find Candice at home getting lost in a good book. “I’m a book addict!
At the moment, I’m reading Trevor Noah’s new book Born a Crime, which is a pretty deep and personal look into his life. I like that; getting to know people, who they really are and not the picture they portray to others. I think it’s important for people to always be themselves, and that’s what I aspire to do. I want people to know me, not a version of me, but the real me.”
She is excited about the future and looks forward to growing, not just professionally, but also growing within herself. “I want to become braver and help others while still keeping my humility.
Eventually I want to work at a bigger Tsogo Sun property in a Marketing Manager or Events Manager role.
I’ve always been intrigued by Egypt; there’s magic there, the legends and stories surrounding this desert country blow my mind.
Montecasino stands out to me, as they have the most amazing theatre; working there would be heaven for me. They have so much happening in their theatre, from musicals to comedy shows and various circus acts. I would absolutely love being a part of that.” She definitely sees herself doing lots of travelling in the future. “First of all, I want to see more of South Africa. This is my country and I want to explore all of its beauty before venturing out. Then I would love to see Egypt. I’ve always been intrigued by Egypt; there’s magic there, the legends and stories surrounding this desert country blow my mind.” She has a tattoo on her slender arm that says ‘Don’t Stop Believing.’ “The word believe means so much to me. So often you can get disheartened and lose faith, but we have limited time here, and when you pass on, you will be only a memory, unless you leave a strong legacy.
You have to keep believing in yourself and your abilities. This tattoo reminds me that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to as long as you keep believing in yourself.”
