Newcastle’s Simonè Potgieter gives us a glimpse into her fairytale bushveld wedding

The venue

I was spoilt for choice and what made it even easier was that we were engaged for three years before we got married, so we could really take our time to choose the right venue. We love the bushveld, so when we heard about Bordeaux Game Farm in Limpopo, we knew that it would be perfect for us. We went to visit the venue and everything was so perfect. It was breathtaking, exactly what we were looking for. We decided to have the wedding in September, because the weather is just perfect that time of year.

The proposal

We are high school sweethearts, and I knew in my heart that we would get married and spend the rest of our lives together. In 2014, we went to Mauritius on holiday. It was the first time we had gone away, just the two of us. We went to dinner to celebrate my birthday and afterwards to the beach. He was extremely nervous, so I knew something was going on. On the beach, there were lit candles. It looked amazing and while I admired that, he went down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He is a romantic at heart and he really went the whole nine yards to make it extra special for me. I was so excited, since I had been waiting for his proposal for so long.

The cake

We had three cakes at the wedding. They suited the botanical theme of the invitations perfectly. As a matter of fact, the baker used the same stencil that was used for the invitations on the cake.

The theme

The theme was botanical. We like earthy tones and I love flowers, especially hanging flowers. Our wedding planner, Zavion Kotze Events Company, also took care of the flowers. We wanted the reception hall to look like a breathtaking garden. He chose white orchids to make that dream come true for us. The venue is a seven-hour drive from Newcastle, so I needed to hand the project over to a co-ordinator I could trust. Zavion was amazing. He took care of everything. He took our ideas, added the right amount of zest to it and delivered something spectacular. Our wedding day was beautiful and magical.

The big day

We got married under a huge marula tree; it was so beautiful. The photographer, RDK Photography, did a wonderful job of capturing our memories. My wedding day is something that I will always remember. I’m so grateful that we had the opportunity to get married at such a beautiful venue, surrounded by the people we love.

The dress

It’s true what they say; when you find that perfect dress, you will immediately know it. I must have tried on around 10 dresses, but none of them had that spark I was looking for. I went to a designer, Anèl Botha in Klerksdorp. I spoke to her and told her about myself and what I like. When she came to me with the sketch, I was amazed at what she came up with. The theme for the dress I think was timeless elegance.

The details

We all had our hair and makeup done by Angelic Allure Bridal. She is so professional, I felt like a movie star! We had a fantastic bridal party; my bridesmaids looked stunning and they were so supportive of me. The groomsmen were handsome and ready to help wherever they could. We consider ourselves blessed that we could have both my parents and his with us to celebrate the day with us.

The family

All our guests stayed at the game farm for the weekend. We had a braai and reconnected with friends and family, we haven’t seen in a while. The morning after the wedding we had breakfast together before we greeted everyone. My parents and my in-laws stayed behind for a few more days. We took the opportunity to go sight-seeing and just spend some quality time together.

The food

We love good food and when it came to choosing the food, we knew we wanted to please everyone. It was a tough decision, as everything they offered at the venue looked so amazing. We had an antipasti table for our canapès. There were all kinds of finger foods like quiche, wraps and burgers. We also had a roosterkoek table. The main was braised oxtail, chicken pot pies and lamb rack. The dessert table was a real treat. The theme was white with mouth-watering treats like New York based cheesecake and custard cake, Nutella cheesecake, carrot cake, chocolate cake, white chocolate moose, lemon tart and milk tart.

We went to Dubai for three days before going to Maldieves for a week. We had an amazing honeymoon. Dubai was so clean, posh and different. A wonderful experience! Maldieves is really a place where you can relax and soak up the breathtaking surroundings. It’s a destination for anyone’s bucket list.
